Motor direction is configured through your flight controller's Betaflight CLI or Configurator using the "motor_poles" and resource remapping commands, while BLHeli_32 ESC settings allow you to reverse individual motor rotation digitally without physically swapping any wires.

Getting motor direction right is absolutely critical for your quadcopter to fly properly. The standard configuration uses props-in on a freestyle quad, meaning the propellers spin inward at the front and outward at the back when viewed from above. Motor 1 (front right) spins clockwise, motor 2 (back right) counterclockwise, motor 3 (back left) clockwise, and motor 4 (front left) counterclockwise.

The beauty of BLHeli_32 ESCs is that you can reverse motor direction digitally without touching a single wire. Connect your flight controller to your computer with the quad powered via a battery. Open Betaflight Configurator and navigate to the Motors tab first. Remove props obviously. With the battery connected, slowly spin up each motor individually using the sliders to verify which physical motor corresponds to which number in Betaflight.

Once you know your motor mapping, head to the BLHeli_32 Configurator. You can access this either as a standalone application or through the Betaflight Configurator passthrough function. The passthrough method is cleaner because you don't need to disconnect anything. In Betaflight Configurator, go to the Motors tab and click "BLHeli_32 Passthrough" at the bottom.

When BLHeli Suite opens, you'll see all four ESCs listed. Click "Read Setup" to pull the current configuration from each ESC. Now here's where it gets practical. Look for the "Motor Direction" setting on each ESC. It will show either Normal or Reversed. Based on your earlier motor test and knowing which direction each motor should spin, simply change the direction setting for any motors spinning the wrong way.

After changing motor direction settings, click "Write Setup" to flash the new configuration to your ESCs. The process takes maybe five seconds per ESC. Disconnect from BLHeli Suite, go back to Betaflight's Motors tab, and test again with props off. Each motor should now spin the correct direction.

Regarding propeller installation, match the propeller type to the motor direction. Props are marked with an R for clockwise rotation or no marking for counterclockwise. Some manufacturers use different systems but the principle remains constant. Install the correct prop on each motor shaft and secure with the appropriate nut, tightening counterclockwise on clockwise motors and clockwise on counterclockwise motors so they self-tighten during flight.

If you ever need to reverse all motors simultaneously, perhaps when switching frame configurations, BLHeli_32 Suite lets you select all four ESCs at once and apply direction changes universally. This saves considerable time compared to older ESC protocols where you'd physically swap two of the three motor wires on each ESC that needed reversing.
